Twitter filed last week for trademark protection for the mark BIRDSIGNALS, in an apparent move toward deeper ad products and market analysis.  By the description of what its service offering will be, it looks like Twitter wants to help you use its data.

The description in its new trademark filing with the USPTO describes Twitter’s Birdsignals as:

“Class 035 : Advertising and marketing; advertising services; online advertising and marketing services; business data analysis; promotional services; business networking; online service for connecting social network users with businesses; business monitoring and consulting services, namely, providing strategy, insight, marketing guidance, and for analyzing and understanding consumer behavior and motivations, and market trends; …”

Twitter launched limited test of what it called “Birdsignals” in the UK last year, according to this Wired article from November 2013.  The picture with this post is an artifact of that (apparently successful in Twitter’s eyes) UK experiment.

So that’s the gist of it.  It looks like something is coming from Twitter, under the name “BIRDSIGNALS,” that would be a level of data and tools beyond Twitter’s current advertising offerings.

For those of you who want to review the whole BIRDSIGNALS description penned by Twitter’s trademark lawyers, the application’s services description goes on after that, in increasing detail:
